Hoax Call Prompts RAF Jets to Intercept Qatar Airways Flight

Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets belonging to the RAF were scrambled following a false security threat against a Qatar Airways Boeing 777-300ER (registration A7-BAJ), operating flight #QR23 from Doha to Manchester in the UK.

Following the report received by NATS, the fighter jets took off from RAF Coningsby to escort the passenger aircraft as part of an interception mission. The aircraft landed safely in Manchester at 19:45 local time.

While police confirmed there was no actual threat, they reported identifying a 14-year-old boy residing in Bolton who was not on board the flight and is believed to have made the hoax call. It was stated that the boy is assisting police with the investigation and that the inquiry into the incident is ongoing.
